Long-term nutritional supplementation reduces progression of age-related macular degeneration
Posted by New Food Corporation, 24-05-2013 08:47
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is characterized by the deterioration of the eye's macula, which results in impairment of central vision. Although there is currently no cure, a combination of beta-carotene, vitamins C and E, and zinc (AREDS1 formula) were associated with a reduction in the progression of the disease in a trial that concluded in 2001.In a current study scientists compared the AREDS1 formula to new combinations in order to improve the effects. The scientists left out the beta-carotene and added lutein and zeaxanthin.
Although the initial results were disappointing, 5 years after the second AREDS study without beta-carotene and with lutein and zeaxanthin showed a lower progression to advanced AMD. The addition of lutein and zeaxanthin to the original AREDS formula showed a 10% decrease in the risk of progression to advanced AMD. Adding Omega 3 fatty acids did not lead to additional positive effects.
The team continues to recommend the use of the AREDS formulation in persons with intermediate AMD or advanced AMD in 1 eye and persons at moderate to high risk of developing advanced AMD.
Higher vitamin D levels linked to lower hypertension risk

A team of scientists from the University of Cambridge did a meta-analysis of several studies concerning the link between vitamin D levels and the risk of developing high blood pressure. The meta-analysis, including over 280,000 people, showed that having a 25-hydroxyvitamin D level among the top one-third of participants was associated with a 30% lower risk of hypertension in comparison with the risk experienced by those whose levels were among the lowest third. A further analysis revealed that each 10 nanogram per milliliter (ng/mL) increase in 25-hydroxyvitamin D was associated with a 12% reduction in the risk of future hypertension. In conclusion: people with higher vitamin D blood levels have a lower risk of developing hypertension.
