Discovered: a „sport hormone“!

Scientists recently published a study in the online version of „Nature“, concerning irisine; a hormone that triggers some of the key health benefits of exercise.
This hormone is produced during sporting activities and it switches on genes that convert white fat into “good” brown fat. Furthermore, irisine was shown to improve glucose tolerance, a key measure of metabolic health.

Irisine caused beneficial effects in mice that were injected with this hormone and it could possibly be therapeutic for humans, fighting obesity and/or problems with the glucose homeostasis. Unfortunately, irisine is not responsible for the building of muscles. For that amazing “six pack” or the stunning biceps, it will still be necessary to go to the gym…..
